Full length heat treating
of bar and tubing enables Gerdau MACSTEEL customers to machine
distortion-free parts, eliminate production processes and SAVE MONEY.
The Heat Treating Division of Gerdau MACSTEEL was established
in 1981 at a new facility in Huntington, Indiana. Gerdau MACSTEEL
engineers were not satisfied with the current state-of-the-art heat
treating equipment so they began RE-ENGINEERING everything from quench
rings to austenitizing coils.
An effective operation was not obtained until the
re-engineering enabled the quench and temper line to achieve the
following results: straightness deviations of less than 0.030 inch per
3 ft. of material; Rockwell C hardness spread of less than 4 points;
and one-half commercial heat treat tolerances as cited by the American
Society for Testing and Materials in its A519 specification.
In 1990 a new quench and temper line increased the capacity at
Gerdau MACSTEEL's Heat Treating Division. To accommodate the new line,
Gerdau MACSTEEL expanded the Huntington, Indiana facility by 20,000
sq. ft. At the same time, it installed a new 15-inch Behringer band
saw to complement the existing abrasive saws.
Today the Heat Treating Division in Huntington, Indiana, is a
state-of-art, unique, technically advanced induction heating facility
that specializes in bar and tube heat-treating. Full support equipment
for customized cutting, straightening, tensile testing and
sophisticated metallographic analysis is part of this in-line process,
which can handle lengths up to sixty feet.
With many years of "hands-on" experience, Gerdau MACSTEEL has
mastered the art of finely tuned induction heating. It works by
combining advanced equipment design and manufacturing techniques with
the talents, experience and close interaction of operations,
technical, sales and management people. Gerdau MACSTEEL's Heat
Treating Division Is now undergoing a major $5.3 million expansion.
This program will provide a third complete heat treating line along
with additional straightening, cutting, marking and packaging
equipment - and bring capacity to over 40,000 tons per year.
